A metaphor?! You can't be serious...please explain. I don't follow, but thats probably because I'm so stupid. Have a little patience.

When in doubt, consult Rebel Without A Crew...

"Take that $20,000+ you were planning on spending on UCLA or New York University Film School and put it right back in your pocket. They can't teach you how to tell a story in film school, and even if they did, you wouldn't want to learn it from them anyway. They also won't teach you how to make a good low-budget movie all by yourself, with very little money. They teach you how to make big movies, with a big crew so that when you graduate after spending $20,000+ on your diploma, you can go to Hollywood and get a job pulling cables on someone else's big movie."

I don't know if this is true, and judging by other posts, it isn't, but the truth is, I don't have the patience to sit through 3 more years of school. I'm getting out while I'm ahead, which, technically speaking, I'm not.

Ahh yes Robert Rodriguez. Robby, Robby robby. Rob, Rob, Rob. Funny how his most original and inventive film Bedhead was made at film school. Also Film school in Ireland is free. So no $20,000 here mate.

Is there any other myths I can destroy?

Fuck film school People just want your money when you can learn it all yourself. Tarantino, Guy Ritchie, Rob Rodriguez, they never went to film school, man, they just watched films. Anyone has enough knowledge to make a film; even Dave Stewart from that music group with no experience in film making made 'Honest' with the All-Saints. Okay, it was a shit film, but he made it.
Stick with your own ideas - they are much more a teacher than any other film making tutor. Or take the 10 minute film school by Rodriguez.

Ok are my posts invisible or something?
    Cos I can read them.

Sorry but some of the people on this forum are a joke. Amazingly small minded NEWBIES come on here and say-fuck film school man, I'm keeping it real, with my shit cam-corder in my back garden with no crew and my mates. Ill get to hollywood man honest. I can teach myself everything man I don't need any help from anyone with ACTUAL expeirience.

I mean its hilarious. I can't wait to see who actually "makes it" off this forum.

You lame arse. Read my post carefully and it makes complete sense. Ridley Scott, another example NEVER went to film school. He started a small film company with his brother that was only ameteur, submitting work to various companies and look how far he has got. Film school didn't give him his position today. Talent and sheer will did. I can't see that in you.

    Hey there.

Ridley Scott may not have gone to film school but he did go to art school. From that he became a designer and got work with the BBC then got comercial gigs. Education had as much a part in his success as anything else.

There is no point in coming up with loads of directors who did or didnt go to film school. Its just going to get boring. I my self am not at filmschool so how the hell do I know if its good for me or not. Also people at film school dont JUST make movies at school Im sure they do stuff in there own time too. So in fact I would say they are getting the best of both worlds.

As long as you have talent and the will to succseed I dont see how going to filmschool can do any harm.

    P.S
Cozza in your profile you say your "Uni Student" what are you studying? Im assuming its not film. Why bother then?

Shouldnt you be out there filming rather than stuck behind a desk. If Talent and sheer will is all you need why the hell go to UNI. Have a little back bone and quit. Have the currage of your convictions. Be a filmmaker full time.

That is one thing to be said about film school. Those guys have made a real commitment to several years of there life for Making movies. Not just gone to uni to study buisness to keep daddy happy. Because you know that one day your gonna have to get a "real" job.

I am going out with Generic on this one.

For the most part you are a all extremely IGNORANT. I go to film school and I probally know about ten times more about the film indutry, the history of film, how to tell a story, and how to make a film then most of you ignorant wannabes know.

Film school is not about sitting in classes, take for example my upcoming week. I am working on two films currently, this means I have 4 production meetings, and 4 shoots. I am shooting Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday... all will be at least 10 hour days, with real actors. No 'mates,' even though I am friends with the people I go to school with (considering I live with two of em').

I am only in my second year, and I've been exposed to many job offers, or volunteer experiences from working at the 16th Annual Gemini Awards (The Canadian Golden Globes type thing) to working on Hollywood features that are being shot in Toronto.. ie. Ever heard of a film called "X-Men?"

So, while you kids are playing in your backyards (with the exception of Chance, who seems to be the only person on this board to not go to film school, and be shooting REAL films on film.) with your dinky camcorders (which give you the worst picture once the sun starts to set).. I will be shooting on both colour reversal and negative film, with amazing Arri and Atton sync cameras with proper sound, and well stocked lighting kits (scrims, china balls, gels, diffusion, reflectors... BLAH BLAH, you name I get to use it), and get to edit on either flat bed editors or on FCP/ Avid machines with a real multitrack studion (sound mixing).. basically the works... ALL for under 5000 Canadian dollars a year + my cost of living...

You guys honestly have NO IDEA what you are talking about. Thank you.

    Hey there.

Shirt all what you said may be true man but lest face it. Non of that makes you a better filmmaker than anyone else round here making movies with there "mates". Just becaues your shooting "real" movies on "film" doesnt make you any better than anyone else. You can still go to filmschool and be a talentless hack. Look at Bret Ratner.

I read a quote form Peter Jackson the otherday that went something along the lines of
"Id rather watch a great movie shot of VHS than a boring movie shot on 65mm. If you have filmmaking talent is wil be recognised" I totaly agree. Just because you have the recourses doesnt mean you have the talent. I hope you do man and good look to you. Its gonna be a big waste of your life if if you end up doing three years of school and end up making cups of tea for Paul Anderson.

    Despin out.
